Study ranks Arizona No. 1 in strict DUI laws

According to a new study, no state in America has DUI laws that are more strict than those in Arizona. The state ranked out at No. 1 when all 50 states and Washington D.C. were considered.

The study used a total of 15 different metrics to decide where the states ranked. Things considered included the use of ignition interlock devices, fines handed out, minimum jail sentences, and things of this nature. States were then ranked in individual categories before being ranked overall.

For example, Arizona has a one-day minimum jail sentence even for a first-time DUI offender, which ranked first. For those with a second DUI, the minimum soars to 90 days. That ranked third overall. The state also ranked third for the minimum fines on both a first and second offense. They came in at $750 and $1,750, respectively.

When looking at how long a DUI still factors into future cases, Arizona set the limit at seven years, which ranked 21st. The 90-day license suspension ranked ninth overall. Insurance premiums tended to go up by 37 percent in Arizona, which put the state at 14th overall.

These are just a few highlights, but they show that getting a DUI in Arizona is nothing to take lightly. When you consider jail time, a license suspension, court costs, fines and insurance increases, it's clear that the impact can be huge -- even before considering things like whether or not you'll be able to keep your job.

As such, it's extremely important for anyone who has been accused of driving under the influence to know his or her legal rights. All deserve a fair trial.
