Police cracking down on drunk drivers around the holidays

Police in Arizona have a special focus on drunk driving this year. They've worked hard to make more traffic stops and more arrests, something they plan to do for the entire holiday season.

The holidays often tend to see a spike in drunk driving. People are celebrating, getting together with friends and taking time off from work or school. The festive atmosphere can be fun, but it also means more people head out to the car wondering if they're really under the limit and safe to drive.

If people have to wonder, the Executive Director of Mothers Against Drunk Driving in Arizona says that means they probably aren't safe to drive.

The statistics from Halloween weekend already show a surge in stops and arrests as police put more and more focus on this specific area. In 2016, police pulled over 5,878 people and arrested 216 of them on suspicion of drunk driving. In 2017, they pulled over 11,634 people and arrested 447 of them.

It is worth noting that part of the change was just a shift in what was considered Halloween weekend. In 2016, it was just Oct. 29 to Oct. 31. In 2017, it was Oct. 27 to Oct. 31. The extra time that the police officers spent looking for alleged drunk drivers resulted in more stops and arrests.

Since the police have this focus, it will likely continue through Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. It's important for those who are arrested during the DUI crackdown to know all of the legal rights that they have and what defense options they can utilize.
